Minwha

Minhwa is a traditional Korean folk art style that was created by ordinary people during the Joseon Dynasty. Unlike formal court paintings, minhwa was not about strict technique or status—it was about expression, symbolism, and everyday life.

These paintings were often used to decorate homes and were believed to bring good luck, protection, prosperity, and happiness. Common subjects include animals (like tigers and cranes), flowers (like lotus and peonies), books, and nature—each carrying symbolic meaning.

Visually, minhwa is known for:

  • Bold outlines and simple, expressive forms
  • Flat perspectives (not realistic depth)
  • Soft yet vibrant colors
  • Decorative, almost pattern-like compositions

What makes minhwa special is its warm, imperfect, and human feel—it’s less about perfection and more about storytelling and meaning.
